Preventing Pipeline Damage – Call 811 Before You Dig

Unsafe digging, farming, and excavating around pipelines is a major cause of pipeline damage. Contact the local one call center (811) in advance of any fencing, landscaping, or major construction project. State laws require notification before digging or excavating.

  • Call 811 before you dig.
  • Wait the state required amount of time for all utility companies to mark the location of their underground utility lines.
  • Respect the utility markers and dig carefully.

Examples of activities that would require a call to 811:

  • Operation of heavy equipment or vehicles on a pipeline right-of-way
  • Construction of homes, roads, fences, drives, ditches, or other facilities
  • Agricultural activities of deep tilling, fencing, and other sub-soil activities

What To Do If You Are Digging And Disturb a Pipeline

Even if you cause what seems to be only minor damage to the pipeline, notify us immediately. A gouge, scrape, dent, or even crease to the pipe coating may cause a future break or leak. It is imperative that we inspect and repair any damage to the line.
